33 SCENES FROM LIFE
Portrait
An autobiographically inspired drama in which an artist called Julia seeks a way of coping with her mother’s illness with cancer. The disease is threatening to destroy the intellectual family in which the mother is a writer and her husband a filmmaker. The father drinks himself to the point of requiring hospitalization, and Julia is suffering from extreme mood fluctuation after futilely attempting to work through her mother’s suffering in her art. The living-out of these indeterminate emotions starkly contrasts with the tranquil opening scenes, which are bathed in warm colours, and hints at conflicts that were simmering below the surface even before calamity befell the family.
