Romania as an occupying power in the 1920s: a border guard regiment led by Officer Dumitriu takes an iron-fisted approach to maintaining order against marauding Macedonian rebels. Living alongside her husband, Dumitriu's wife Marie-Thérèse witnesses the events and manages to keep a cool head in what is an increasingly tense situation. When rebels murder some of his soldiers, Dumitriu must choose between his attentive wife and his vengeful commander. With great subtlety, Pintilie stages a tragedy revolving around two conscientious individuals and their descent into the hellish border conflicts of the Balkans.
