Niko Pirosmanishvili (1862-1918) is one of the greatest naive painters and outstanding artistic personalities to have emerged from Georgia. Although he enjoyed no formal training and spent his life in poverty, he left a vast legacy of fascinating paintings in which he depicted the people and milieu around him as well as fantasy figures. Instead of relating Pirosmani’s life, Paradzhanov’s documentary evokes his art and times by poetically assembling elements of his work.
