Emin lives in an old house on the edge of an isolated Bosnian village – his daily life is dominated by bitter cold and the haunting howl of the wind blowing across the snow-covered landscape. To make it through the harsh winter, the ageing man fells timber in the nearby forests. His sole confidant is his horse – a source of warmth and fellowship. AT THE DOOR OF THE HOUSE WHO WILL COME KNOCKING deals with unspoken worry and a world practically lifted from the pages of a fairy tale, albeit one where people can never seem to find time for one another. "Everybody is in a rush," as Emin's neighbour sums it up, in one of the film's few spoken sentences. Maja Novaković's feature-film debut wins over the viewer with its strong visual aesthetic. Over the course of the film, the static compositions gradually hone in ever closer on the protagonist, allowing his wounded heart to move more and more clearly into the foreground. In the process, the director blurs the boundaries between perception, memory and imagination and creates space for the existential observations of an unseen, withdrawn life.
