BEFORE THE RAIN

London and Macedonia serve as the backdrop for three love stories, featuring a young monk, a dedicated photo editor and a disillusioned war photographer as protagonists. The film’s three intertwined chapters explore the merciless nature of war, as its unresolvable conflicts drag all involved into the abyss. The episodes’ titles (“Words”, “Faces” and “Pictures”) refer both to barriers to cultural understanding and to the photos of an exhibition, and thus to the media’s ambivalent role in times of war. Looking backwards from the present, this episodic reverse-chronology narrative only succeeds in breaking through the deadly spiral of violence thanks to its form.
