BLIND LOVES

Competition

Love is said to be blind, and this impressive Slovakian documentary is about blind people in love – partners who cannot see each other but all the same enjoy (often) very harmonious relationships. Equally impressive is the confidence director Juraj Lehotský apparently inspired in his subjects, how close he is allowed to move up to his carefully chosen protagonists. The camera never seems voyeuristic or sensationalist, nor does the film appear to be aspiring to a “blind” aesthetic. The destinies of the four couples are compellingly captured, framed and composed by Juraj Chlpík’s camera. The first episode is dedicated to the blind music teacher Peter, whose rich powers of imagination are conveyed in playful animated sequences. Another episode revolves round 14-year-old Zuzka and her hopes that her internet Romeo will turn out to be Mr. Right. The images in BLIND LOVES, the director’s first cinema-length documentary, are moving and not easily forgotten: a glimpse into the world of the sightless revealing much that we who enjoy the faculty of vision no longer even notice.
