BLUEBERRY DREAMS

Competition

A stone's throw from the conflict-plagued border with the Russian-backed Abkhazia region, former engineer Soso and his wife and two sons are daring to make a fresh start. Spurred on by a new agricultural funding initiative from the Georgian government, they move to the countryside, to pursue their dream of making a living as blueberry planters. Alas, their plan is on shaky ground from the very beginning. In breathtakingly beautiful panorama shots, director Elene Mikaberidze captures the family's existential fears – fears that grow even larger when the ominous news of the invasion of Ukraine begins to make the rounds, reawakening the parents' memories of the Caucasus War of 2008. Like the film's striking images, the family dynamic also stands in sharp contrast to the tense personal and geopolitical situation – for, in spite of the adversity they face, Soso, his wife Nino and their children Giorgi and Lazare retain their warm-heartedness, as solidarity helps them keep their faith in a better future alive.
