A CHRONICLE OF AMOROUS ACCIDENTS

This was the first film that Wajda – after years of working outside his country – was able to realize in Poland. The source material, a novel by Tadeusz Konwicki, one of Poland’s most influential postwar-authors, allowed Wajda to unite all of his thematic preferences. Poland, 1939. In a small village, Jews and Christians, Poles, Germans and Russians live together in peace. The film tells of a circle of young people during a harmonious summer – never anticipating the catastrophe the fall will bring. To quote the film: “Yes, the country of my childhood is no more. It only lives in me, and with me it will turn to ashes in some unforeseen, rapidly approaching hour.”
