Non-conformist Velya is ahead of her time – in grey 1990s Minsk she looks like a young Madonna and hopes to make a go of it as a DJane. Her dream: to escape Belarus for Chicago, the birthplace of House music. Alas, without proof of gainful employment, she can forget about being approved for a US visa. During an interview at the American embassy, Velya pretends to be the successful manager of a provincial crystal factory. Her plan seems to be working, until her lie forces her to travel out to the countryside to keep her cover. The subsequent encounter with the reality of her alibi turns out bumpy.
