A photograph of a dead Latvian woman, shot by Red Army soldiers in 1940 not far from her house on the then-yet-independent Baltic state's border with the USSR, forms the departure point for Dāvis Sīmanis' documentary exploration on both sides of the borderline between Latvia and Russia. This film shows what it means to live in the border region to Russia. It reflects on national cultures of remembrance and identity formation in the face of Soviet nostalgic celebration culture. Patriotism, nationalism and imperialism are intertwined.
