On an ocean liner, a Russian passenger starts a conversation with the Italian Romano who tells him of his eventful life. He once was married to a wealthy woman who loved him truly, but whom he betrayed with another. On her birthday, his wife tells him that her family is close to bankruptcy and accuses him of being a no-good loser. Romano, who always avoids problems and conflicts, evades the situation by traveling to a noble spa town. There the good-looking bon vivant gets to know the charming as well as sensitive Russian Anna. After a night together, Anna leaves head over heels, though. All she leaves for Romano is a letter: She loves Romano but under no circumstances wants to see him again because she is married. But Romano is determined to find Anna. He follows her to Russia, where he finds her in her small hometown and confesses his love. Tearfully, Anna promises to leave her husband under one condition: Romano has to tell his wife the truth first. Back in Rome, his wife questions him: Is there another woman in Russia? Once again, Romano proves to be a coward – he denies everything, disowns Anna and in doing so betrays their love.
