The murder of a 14-year-old girl not far from Budapest in November 2008 roused attention in Hungary and abroad because it was instrumentalized by the far-right Jobbik party in order to propagate the existence of a purported “gypsy criminality” (which the party continues to use as a combative slogan) and by means of the newly established vigilante group “Magyar Gárda” to stage parades and punitive measures in Roma settlements. Starting with these events, Roberto Festa accompanies two protagonists of the “guards” as they go about their day-to-day business and political activities, offering unprecedented insight in the process.
