THE SECOND LIFE OF F.W.G. PLATOW

The progress brought by the so-called scientific-technical revolution descends upon lineman Platow. He has been carrying out his duties in the station of Luege for many years, and suddenly his lineman’s cabinet is to be sacrificed to technical progress. Aged fifty-seven, Platow could take a comfortable job on a branch line and take it easy until pensioned off. When his son Georg rejects the offer of a supplementary training course, Platow makes a decision. He pretends to be the twenty-year younger man, and joins the class. The physical transformation is the least of his problems: learning the unfamiliar material demands all his resources and tricks. And when Platow falls in love with young Malvine, his life is turned upside-down.
