Deep in the stormy ocean lives a feared sea devil: Ichtyander, the amphibian man, son of Doctor Salvator, the result of a dodgy experiment. Human-animal hybrids are no strangers to this genre but Aleksandr Belyaev’s prose adds a new and zany dimension (not to mention the splendidly colourful South Sea costumes and sets). Yet the questions that bother this naïve and affectionate fishman are only too human: he is in love with Guttiere and persecuted by the evil Zurita. Capitalism, exotism, gender roles – the imaginary has a field day. Hats off and a “Silver Spaceship” to both directors.
