THE REAPER

A woman is walking down a country road; it’s pitch black. In the distance a light approaches, the headlights of a tractor. The driver stops – and the woman gets in with the stranger. What starts out like a horror movie develops into a tension-filled and subtle social drama, set on a single night in a remote Croatian small town. The central figure is the tractor driver Ivo, who did prison time for rape twenty years ago. Mirjana, the woman whose car broke down on the country road, learns this from the young gas station attendant Josip while buying a can of gas. In spite of this stealthy warning, after a brief moment of hesitation she gets back in the tractor with Ivo. Josip soon becomes concerned for this unknown woman’s safety and makes a fateful decision ... The brilliant interplay between the two leads and Branko Linta’s exceptional camerawork give THE REAPER an enormous resonance. The mistrust, fears and trauma of the individual characters grab and keep hold of the viewer long after the final credits have rolled.
