In a provincial movie theatre, the film characters begin to interact with the real world and refuse to play the roles assigned to them. Faced with this loss of control, the local censor stumbles between fiction and reality while drowning in vodka and moral dilemmas. Wojciech Marczewski, one of the most heavily censored Polish intellectuals of his day, is responsible for this poetic film poised on the threshold between totalitarianism and democracy. The opening scene already challenges whether freedom of expression is possible at all: “In the moment censorship is abolished as an institution, the task to censor will devolve on you.”
