Two adolescent boys brought up by their mother are confronted by the sudden re-appearance of a father absent without trace for the past ten years. He takes his sons on a trip to an island in northern Russia. From the moment they depart it is clear that he is determined to make the boys accept his authority. The ensuing conflicts culminate in an argument and the father’s accidental death. This debut feature won the “Golden Lion” at Venice in 2003, as well as several other awards, including one from the Catholic organization SIGNIS, and the European John Templeton Film Prize.
