Deported from Kalmykia during the Second World War, Grandfather Anju (played by Maksim Munzuk, familiar as the lead from Kurosawa’s DERSU UZALA) now lives in a Siberian village with his grandson Lidji, together with other displaced individuals, like "the Latvian" and his nephew Leo from Riga. One day, a fellow villager is found murdered. Although innocent, Grandfather Anju immediately becomes a suspect and is arrested by the local police, leaving little Lidji to fend for himself.
