Vova knows what counts in life. His prospective father-in-law gives him a challenge – if he successfully converts the basement of an old house in St. Petersburg into a restaurant, the building’s attic is his own to convert into a loft. The attic turns out to be squatted by two artists – the eccentric, suicidal Dasha and the hard-drinking painter Gena – along with their guru. Vova decides to deploy these layabouts as cheap labour, but the consequences of this clash of New Russia and the Old are unexpected. Vova discovers the beauty of non-utilitarian objects, learns how to meditate, and finally grasps the difference between love and sex. At that point, his boss commits his new friends to the care a psychiatric hospital.
