Marius is a divorcee in his late-thirties. The only ray of light in his life is his daughter Sofia, who lives with his ex-wife Otilia and her new husband. Marius sets out to make a birthday trip to the seaside with Sofia, but his path soon proves beset with obstacles. A disagreement grows into a family conflict, one that snowballs steadily, until there is no turning back. With great sensitivity, Radu Jude traces the escalating lines of conflict within a family, a tangle of disappointed expectations, hurt feelings and misunderstood affections.
