FAMILY BUSINESS
Beyond Belonging
To finance the completion of her home in Lubin, Jowita leaves Poland to take a job as a live-in caregiver for 88-year-old Anne in Bochum, Germany. Alas, the relationship between the two women proves problematic in many regards: Anne is used to ruling the roost and finds it difficult to accept the presence of a stranger. Communication on a respectful equal footing is also hard – language barriers and impatience often get in the way. Christina Büchner has managed to provide an empathetic, balanced look at the lives and economic circumstances of both women. The director and camera crew remain present throughout as observers. The two protagonists’ personal differences also provide FAMILY BUSINESS with many a wonderfully funny moment.
