FATA MORGANA

Homage

The first contact between the Lygʺoravètḷʹèt (Chukchi people) and Russian traders took place in the 17th century. Ever since, this indigenous group, which lives according to an ancient tradition of reindeer herding and hunting marine animals such as whales and walruses, is increasingly being deprived of its livelihood. Calling on legends and tales from their history, a woman reminds a group of Lygʺoravètḷʹèt who they really are – who they were and could be once again. With its blend of documentary and animated scenes, FATA MORGANA is among the filmmaking duo's most formally brilliant works.
