The Berlin Wall has just fallen. Having earlier starred in Godard’s ALPHAVILLE (1965), actor Eddie Constantine reprises his signature character, secret agent Lemmy Caution, who takes on one last mission under the aegis of Graf Zelten. The ageing spy’s wanderings through the newly reunited Germany – from the rusted machinery of the East German hinterlands to the garish consumerism of West Berlin – serve as an essayistic exploration of European history, literature and philosophy, in a film that is a significant precursor to Godard’s magnum opus HISTOIRE(S) DU CINÉMA.
