I EVEN MET HAPPY GYPSIES

The film (whose title means „feather collector“) was a pioneering work in the theme of the Roma. In a never-before-seen manner, it described the life of the wandering minority and their difficulties in being integrated into society. Director Petrović tells of the fate of the Roma living in the Wojwodina by means of the dramatic love story between Bora and Tisa. Bora deals with goose feathers and gets around much in the country. When one day he meets Tisa, who is being pressurized by her stepfather, he falls in love with her and finally lives together with her and his first wife in his cabin, surrounded by children. But Tisa, as restless as Bora, runs away disappointed and ends up in Belgrad where she tries to find work as a singer – but in vain. Bora finds her at her stepfather’s and a fatal fight occurs. This tragedy, located in the wide plains of Pannonia, has been turned into a composition of colours and myths, feathers and blood and rustic men and women by director Petrović.
