“Animals are so straightforward. People should be just as honest as animals.” Pišta is looking for love and that’s not easy at all as a human being, for where are more games played, where are there more twists in turns than there are in love? The good-natured railway employee is a little on the short side, likes to have a drink or two or three and has scant success with beautiful women, who seem to prefer going out with his tall colleague Vinco. Hrabalesque, full of wit, poetry and strange images, I LOVE, YOU LOVE tackles the existential dramas of simple people: poverty, overload, dependency and lack of affection. Made in 1980, the film couldn’t be shown until 1989 – the year it also won a Silver Bear for its director in Berlin.
