Jan Dítě is released from a Prague prison in the 1950ies. By chance, it turns out that the house on the German-Czech border that he’s been assigned to used to be a tavern and as he cleans the place up he begins to tell his life story to an exiled dancer. In Czechoslovakia between the great wars, the simple and small-of-stature barman dreams of getting rich. Along the way, he serves illustrious company, develops a taste for beautiful women and finally marries the naive and refreshing Sudeten German Lisa, played by Julia Jentsch. Just when the loveable though more than a tad opportunistic Dítě believes himself to have attained the object of his desires, everything ends up being completely different…
