ME, MY GYPSY FAMILY AND WOODY ALLEN
Beyond Belonging
DOUBLEFEATURE
“I was born in Italy, and I have a Bosnian passport. But my identity is different again: I’m a Roma.” Laura Halilovic’s debut film describes the history of her family, their current living conditions, their dreams. Ten years ago, her parents swapped the travelling life for a rented flat in northern Italy; the rest of her family keeps up the nomadic way of life. Blending old video material with contemporary interview footage, Halilovic tells a coming-of-age story about a day-to-day reality caught between tradition and the determination to go one’s own way, a carefree life often blighted by racism and prejudice.
