A look at a natural scientist in the making. In search of the meaning of life and death, Franciszek manages to emerge from self-imposed isolation and bond with his family again. When he learns soon thereafter that he suffers from a serious heart condition, he summons the courage to look death in the eye, although his rebelling body ultimately forces him to give up his radical quest for truth and knowledge. Lead actor and alpinist Stanisław Latałło, who would fall victim to a fatal accident in the Himalayas just a year later, became one with his character, serving as a role model for the young intelligenzija of his generation.
