In 1987, Juris Podnieks made VAI VIEGLI BUT JAUNAM? / IS IT EASY TO BE YOUNG?, a documentary about rebellious Latvian youths, who had developed an autonomous youth-culture beyond Soviet norms of education. The documentary led to heated debates in the former USSR and became the pivotal film of “Perestroika”. Ten years later, Antra Cilinska – the editor of the film – tracked down the now-adult teenagers from back then: their fates and their fulfilled and disappointed hopes and dreams mirror the changes of Latvia.
