Jagoda, a woman around thirty, works as a cashier in the recently opened “American Supermarket” which fulfills every wish and is a small taster for material wealth for the citizens who are still shaken by the war. But beyond all dreams of consumption, the plain Jagoda longs for human affection. Through a personal column she has met a man. Full of anticipation she awaits their first date. Then the unexpected happens. A masked, heavily armed man enters the supermarket, wildly shoots about and takes all customers and staff as hostages. The motivation of this seemingly crazy doer: His grandmother has been thrown out of the market by a female cashier. And now he wants to find this cashier. Nobody suspects shy Jagoda, who has taken out her frustrations on the old granny. While special police forces take their position outside who would preferably storm the supermarket regardless, absurd complications and interpersonal dramas occur inside. Produced by Serbian director Emir Kusturica, “Jagoda in the Supermarket” is a vicious, fast-moving satire about the political changes in Serbia.
