Hedwig Brunner only avoids Gestapo-imprisonment through of a reckless escape over the roofs. Her ten-year-old son Karl stays behind and is now being spied upon. He finds shelter and work as a kitchen boy with the wealthy family of the Nazi-establishment. Cook Marie knows Karl’s mother from shared underground activities and arranges for him to meet her, which almost leads to both of them being arrested. The film adaption of the novel of the same name by Béla Balázs, who also wrote the script, initially contained a lot of expressionist elements. Due to the Russian censorship numerous of these scenes had to be cut, though camera and architecture still give an impression of this.
