After graduating from university, Karla takes a teaching position in a small town in the northern GDR. She doesn’t just want to feed the kids dry material; instead she really wants to inspire them to think for themselves. Alas her ideals are met with incomprehension from all sides – even from the students – and her unconventional behaviour attracts unwanted attention. After a defeat, Karla conforms, only to rebel right before the A-level exams. In the end her actions have grave consequences.
