LITTLE VILMA is a supplement to Mészáros’ autobiographical trilogy, the “Diaries”: it actually goes back in time to narrate the pre-history of the other installments, a prequel if you will. The setting is the distant Soviet Socialist Republic of Kirghizia. In the 1930s, left-leaning intellectuals from all over Europe ¬– including the director's parents – flocked to the Soviet Union to contribute to the building of a new society. Mészáros’ father fell victim to Stalin's Great Purge; the first Diary is dedicated to his memory. LITTLE VILMA zooms in to focus on the fate of the desolate, isolated and persecuted mothers and children left behind in a hostile environment.
