František Louka was once a celebrated violoncellist. The grey-haired but incorrigible womanizer now ekes a meagre living from playing at funerals and other casual jobs. One day, a cemetery gardener makes a lucrative proposal – a young Russian woman needs to find a Czech husband so that she can stay in the country. After the wedding, however, the woman flees to West Germany, and leaves her small son with her new husband. As the only available (but non-Russian-speaking) relative, František finds himself responsible for 5-year-old Kolya. Turbulent – and fulfilling – times begin for a man who was always determined to stay footloose and fancy free.
