While interned in communist Czechoslovakia in 1950, the wartime pilot František Sláma tells his story. Following the German occupation in 1939, he fled to England to offer his services to the Royal Air Force, taking along his best trainee pilot, the hot-blooded Karel Vojtíšek, who was like a son to the older man. After a long period of waiting together with other exiles, the two men were deployed in the fight against the Germans. Karel survives a crash and meets and falls in love with Susan, an Englishwoman. After he proudly introduces her to František, a chain of fateful events takes its course: Susan immediately loses her heart to František, and their affair cannot be kept secret for long.
