LOVE ISLAND

A young married transnational couple's all-inclusive holiday turns into an emancipatory experiential trip and a lesson in polyamory, desire and lust. Love is in the foreground here, with it all its epiphenomena: including a public birth and a kiss between two men, most likely shown on the big screen for the first time in Bosnian cinema history. After years of examining war and its effects, Jasmila Žbanić shifts gears with an entertaining, queer-feminist romantic comedy that packs a cathartic punch – in a clear rejection of worn-out norms concerning gender relations and conceptions of family.
