MY FRIEND THE GYPSY

Symposium

MY FRIEND THE GYPSY is a perfect demonstration of how to serve up post-war distraction and socio-realistic role model posturing at the same time. The film tackles the exemplary integration of the “gypsy” into industrious, solidary and – henceforth – communist Czechoslovakian society. Communist-Jewish remigrant Jiři Weiss’s (re-)education project, characterised by the stage, performance and studiousness, makes for a splendid visual aid when it comes to revealing the “construction of the other” – in this case of the “Stalinist gypsy proletarian”.
