In the animation style that become her trademark, Signe Baumane tells of the long road that wilful, tomboyish 7-year-old Zelma must take to find peace with herself and her gender. Born in the Soviet Union in 1970, on the island of Sakhalin, she travels through vast realms. Zelma's journey includes two failed marriages – societal pressure and social customs are frequently the sources of her agony. With great humour and lots of music, director Signe Baumane creates a highly personal and forgiving love story while examining the biochemical foundations of love and sex on the periphery of the plot with the aid of science.
