MY MORNING LAUGHTER

Competition

28-year-old Dejan is a history teacher and a bit of a loner. At home, his mother looks after him. Thanks to his lack of social skills, he has trouble with the ladies too. A visit to a fortune teller, who calls attention to Dejan’s quirks but also gives his mom a piece of his mind, turns into a moment of truth for the two of them. And then Dejan’s father dies, to whom he still had a rather child-like relationship. Finally, the unexpected occurs: after at first completely failing to read the signals coming from his co-worker Kaća, the two get closer to one another over the course of a boozy night. With his feature-film debut, Marko Đorđević pulls off a remarkable tragicomedy that shows its humbly furnished rooms and performers’ bodies from unaccustomed perspectives in static shots. Lead actor Filip Đurić is a veritable delight here, for his ability to telegraph Dejan’s awkwardness and helplessness with every self-conscious movement, every nervous gesture and his unending range of anxious facial expressions.
