MYSTERIUM OCCUPATION
Symposium
In 2004, Andrey Kudzinenka realised his independently produced "de-Sovietized" partisan film, which represented a break with the central myth of Belarusian heroism. Set in 1942 during German occupation, this military drama consists of three chapters. Kudzinenka's partisans are cruel, opportunistic, racist and not above terrorising the rural population, which consistently speaks Belarusian (this too is a cinematic first). The film had its distribution permit withdrawn in Belarus. According to the authorities, it failed to reflect "the real truth", and was guilty of "damaging the integrity of war veterans" and exerting a "bad influence on the adolescent generation".
