THE PAINTED BIRD

Europe Europe

Amid the confusion of World War Two, a Jewish couple entrusts their 6-year-old son to an older foster mother who lives in the countryside. Alas, when the woman dies, the young boy is left to fend for himself, henceforth hiking from village to village. Along the way, he witnesses and experiences extraordinary brutality, not only at the hands of soldiers, but above all perpetrated by the ignorant, superstitious rural population. By war’s end, the boy has been forever transformed. Václav Marhoul adapted Polish-Jewish writer Jerzy Kosiński’s 1965 novel “The Painted Bird” for the screen, shot in black-and-white on 35mm film and boasting a star-studded cast.
