NINOTCHKA
Beyond Belonging
Three Soviet comrades come to Paris on a government commission to sell off the Czarist crown jewels. Quickly won over by the advantages of capitalism, the men start to delay the sale unnecessarily. Party hardliner Ninotchka is dispatched to bring the deal to a speedy conclusion. But after a French count falls in love with the emancipated envoy, Ninotchka begins to wonder if the good of the people really does come before personal happiness. Ernst Lubitsch staged his comedy, in which Greta Garbo combines sparkling charm with steely determination, as a play on gender models and class stereotypes.
