NORTHERN LIGHT

Portrait

DOUBLE FEATURE
Observations of contrasts and extremes. In an inhospitable world remote from civilization Loznitsa documents the life of a family that defies harsh conditions in the snow-covered expanses. The audience is immersed in a different dimension. Subdued emotions, thoughtfulness, and ostensible imperturbability are reflected in long takes. Words of conflict fall outside the outside the field of vision, fraught situations culminate in attempted withdrawal within an expansive terrain proving to be unexpectedly cramped. And at the same time two girls at play find a way of celebrating surprising lightness in the wilderness.
