NOSTALGHIA

Specials

To research the biography of a Russian composer, the poet Andrej travels through Italy. Like his countryman, he suffers from “Russian nostalgia”. The mathematician Domenico, regarded as crazy by others, but a soul mate to Andrej, assigns him a task: to walk, a burning candle in hand, through an empty spa dedicated to Saint Katherine, while Domenico commits suicide. Maybe Tarkovskij’s most beautiful film, NOSTALGHIA is a religious meditation with a deeply moving last take: the dead poet sits in front of a Russian farmhouse which is embraced by the roofless ruin of the church of San Galgano.
