19th century Estonia is crawling with all manner of strange characters: werewolves, ghosts and creatures composed of animal bones are all up to no good. Pagan customs collide with Christian rituals, while the peasants simply do what they can to survive the winter. By any means possible! Thievery and deception included – people are selling their souls to make ends meet. In this peculiar world two young individuals meet up and experience a November full of weird events. Village girl Liina falls for farmer’s son Hans and for a while it seems as if he loves her back. Alas, one day the German baron to whom the entire village and the surrounding lands belong brings his daughter along to his castle. Inside the castle, the Estonian servants, inspired by nationalist convictions, steal anything that’s not nailed down, true to the slogan “Whatever is located on Estonian land belongs to the Estonians!” Hans falls instantly in love with the baron’s daughter and attempts to attract her attention. At the same time Liina pays a visit to a witch to seek her advice. Director Rainer Sarnet stages this dark fairy tale for adults in high-contrast black and white. The screenplay is based on Andrus Kivirähk’s hit novel Rehepapp. A work with definite cult film potential.
