The merchant Iskander lives with his two wives in an Uzbek village. When his brother dies, he takes his spouse too, in accordance with a Muslim tradition. When the Bolsheviks enter the village, their attention is drawn to Iskander. Impressed by his rhetorical skills, they make him an orator and Iskander strikes up a relationship with a female Soviet commissar. However, there is no place for polygamy in the Bolshevist worldview, and conflict soon follows. Yusup Razykov depicts the old Uzbek order, which the revolution quickly came to supplant.
