OXYGEN STARVATION
Symposium
The Soviet army was one of those institutions which practiced "applied nationality politics", to bind together an empire. In Andriy Donchyk's equally grim and impressive film OXYGEN STARVATION – one of the first non-state-funded films made in independent Ukraine – this construct erodes. It is military service in practice that is portrayed here, a practice (already at the onset of the "wild '90s") literally akin to being overrun by an enemy horde – hazing and abuse of recruits are routine items on the daily agenda. In OXYGEN STARVATION, Ukrainian lance corporal Bilyk fights back – a struggle to breathe, how timely indeed!
