PHILANTROPIC

Competition

Ovidiu is a literature teacher at a private school in Bucharest, although his real vocation is to be a writer. His first book flopped, though. There is also increasing frustration in school: His pupils arrive in Mercedes cars, armed with mobile phones, while poor Ovidiu doesn’t have any authority. When he summons the parents of troublemaker Robert to his consultation hour, the boy’s attractive sister appears instead of the parents. Ovidiu manages to get a date with the young woman but soon discovers that he can hardly meet her material demands: Their first evening costs him half his monthly pay. In the Writers Café he gets an advice from a drunken poet: He has heard of a man who helps people in need – a true philanthropist. When Ovidiu visits this man he is in for a surprise. This Mr. Puiutz earns his money by sending people into the streets of Bucharest to beg, each one equipped with a “story”. He also has an offer for Ovidiu, who is outraged and turns it down at first – until the next appointment with Robert’s sister is just around the corner. Now two new careers begin for Ovidiu.
