For twenty years, the director followed the rhythm of a life spent mainly in various penal institutions, interspersed with spells in the outside world. Facing the total absence of pace “inside”, René is equally stretched “outside” by the lack of calm. His link between the two worlds is the filmmaker, who becomes the only constant and reliable factor in her protagonist’s life. The contradictions of this fluctuating relationship are reflected in the letters René writes to Trestiková. With the director’s assistance, René becomes a successful writer. His drastic questioning and demands for attention make him an equal but strenuous interlocutor in this painfully close study negotiating a wafer-thin precipice.
