It took until 1976 for a feature film to come along which, instead of producing tired “gypsy images”, genuinely represented Roma and openly treated the neighbourly proximity and encounters between Gadscho and Rom. It is no coincidence here that it was a director who was also experienced in the documentary realm, namely Dušan Hanák, who portrayed the innocent love of postman Jakub and Jolana in such a nuanced fashion. The film managed to shake up both gender role clichés and the diverse conceptions that we have of one another and coexistence. A real trailblazer, not just when it comes to Czechoslovakian cinema!
